Project goal:

create a map-centric risk assessment tool for safe urban navigation and secure parking.

The challenge was to deliver this extensive feature set through a seamless and user-friendly mobile experience.

Map levels

Launch version functionality
1
City-wide burglary risk levels.
2
District-level bike theft risks.
3
Real-time notifications when entering high-risk areas.
4
Detailed district-by-district safety map.

Push notifications

Users receive real-time alerts when entering high-risk zones (burglary or bike-theft zones). Risk levels are calculated using verified government data, police reports, and AI models trained on multi-factor criteria.

Project tasks and solutions
1
Increase the sense of safety in the city
People need to understand crime risks around them: near their home, workplace, or parking locations. The app informs users about the crime level in their area and sends alerts if incidents occur nearby.
2
Provide a clear understanding of risks in real space
Raw statistics are difficult to interpret and do not provide an immediate understanding of the situation. We created a map that visualizes risk levels by districts and neighborhoods using a clear color scale (green, yellow, red) along with percentage-based risk indicators.
3
Predict crime levels, not only report past incidents
Users want to know not only what has already happened but also where the risk is higher in real time. The app predicts risk levels using official crime statistics, environmental and geographical data, powered by advanced machine learning models. Forecasts are regularly updated based on the latest available data.
4
Focus on property-related crimes
Bicycle theft, car theft, and residential burglary are among the most common urban threats in Amsterdam. MyRiskScout focuses on key property-related crimes, particularly bicycle theft and burglary.
5
Deliver instant and personalized notifications
Too many irrelevant notifications reduce the value of an app. We designed a flexible notification system: alerts for selected addresses, different types of incidents, and personalized settings for each user.
6
Make a complex product simple to use
Analytics, ML, and large datasets should not complicate the user experience. We developed the app that features an intuitive interface with two main tabs (risk map and profile), quick navigation, and minimal steps to view information or generate a report.

Creating an MVP

MyRiskScout is developing as a safety map for the Netherlands. Before scaling the product, it was important to validate the idea in a real market. The MVP was launched in Amsterdam, and the mobile app is currently available in the Dutch App Store and Google Play, with the potential to scale to other cities and countries.

Visual style and design

The app’s design was developed by our partners at "snig.digital".

Every design element serves a clear purpose and supports functionality.
There are no unnecessary decorations or aesthetic patterns that do not help users achieve their goals.
The app is optimized for speed and responsiveness, with minimized loading times and efficient use of system resources.

What does this mean for people?

The startup’s mission is critically important, as local safety is not just a feature but a fundamental human need. Today, the mobile application has been successfully launched and is available in the Netherlands on the App Store and Google Play.
